MAPLE COUNTY — The League of Women Voters has completed its audit of the Ward 4 candidate forum snack table following an alleged double-dipping incident that witnesses described as blatant, repeated, and frankly disrespectful to the ranch.
The incident occurred during the closing remarks, when an unidentified attendee was observed dipping a carrot stick, biting it, and re-dipping — not once, but three times, in full view of the front row. Gasps were audible. The carrot stick has not been recovered.
The audit, conducted by snack table steward Denise Marlowe, reviewed three hours of volunteer testimony and one blurry photograph. Findings: the veggie tray was compromised, the ranch bowl showed what Marlowe termed clear evidence of multiple insertions, and the cheese cubes, mercifully, were served with toothpicks and remain above suspicion.
Double-dipping at a civic event is a violation of the unwritten social contract, Marlowe said, arranging fresh toothpicks with the precision of a woman who has seen things. The dip is communal. The carrot is personal. Once they meet, the carrot does not go back.
The League has responded with new snack table protocols, effective immediately: all dips will be served in individual two-ounce cups, all chips must be taken with tongs, and a volunteer will be stationed at the table with what the protocol calls gentle authority and a fresh supply of napkins. The volunteer roster filled within hours.
The candidates themselves were cleared of involvement — all four were on stage during the incident — though one candidate’s spouse was questioned and released after witnesses confirmed she was merely hovering near the brownies with intent but no action.
Public reaction has split along predictable lines. Some residents call the new rules excessive, arguing that individual dip cups generate waste and lack the communal spirit of democracy. Others praise the League’s swift action, including one resident who wrote that she has waited years for someone to finally do something about the double-dippers.
The ranch has been replaced. The carrot sticks have been restocked. And at future forums, Marlowe confirmed, the snack table will feature a small framed sign, lettered by hand, reading: DIP ONCE, VOTE ONCE. The League considers the matter closed, the ranch considered the matter unforgivable.
