The Restroom Task Force issued a public advisory Tuesday warning that the fall-back’s extra hour may cause ‘sustained reflection’ in public facilities, as residents with 60 unexpected minutes ‘find themselves with nowhere to be and a warm, tiled room in which to contemplate it.’

‘The encore hour of 2:00 a.m. is prime reflection time,’ said task force chairwoman Debra Knelp, who also chairs the Municipal Clock-Fall-Back Committee. ‘People will wander into public restrooms at 2 a.m., look in the mirror, and think about their choices. We need those mirrors clean.’

The advisory calls for ‘enhanced mirror maintenance’ at all 42 public facilities during fall-back weekend, plus the stocking of what the task force calls ’emergency affirmation cards’ in every third stall, bearing messages like ‘You Are Doing Fine’ and ‘The Hour Is Free; The Reflection Is Optional.’

Task force inspector Dale Hargrove will conduct ‘reflection-readiness walkthroughs’ at highway rest stops, checking for adequate lighting, working hand dryers, and ‘an atmosphere conducive to gentle self-assessment, not despair.’

‘There’s a fine line,’ Hargrove said. ‘We want people to emerge from the restroom at 2:47 a.m. feeling renewed. Not… otherwise.’

The task force’s budget includes $3,000 for what the line item calls ‘mirror wipes and emotional support signage.’ Knelp defended the expenditure: ‘Have you seen yourself at 2 a.m. during a time change? You need support.’
