Kyle spent an entire Saturday raking his yard into the single largest leaf pile in the history of their subdivision. His kids watched from the porch like tiny foremen.

“We’re building a fortress,” Kyle told them. “Walls. A lookout tower. Maybe a moat.”

“It’s leaves, Dad.”

“Walls,” Kyle repeated.

Big D arrived with a leaf blower, which is the suburban equivalent of showing up with artillery. “Thought I’d help,” he said, pulling the starter cord with the grin of a man about to commit a war crime.

The “help” lasted eleven seconds. Big D sneezed into the blower intake, the nozzle jerked, and a tactical gust of maple leaves launched directly into the neighbor’s above-ground pool.

The neighbor came out in a bathrobe. Words were exchanged. Kyle’s kids learned three new ones.

Kyle apologized with a case of soda and a solemn promise. The neighbor accepted the soda and filed the promise away for later, the way neighbors do.

Then the dog found the fort. Eighty pounds of golden retriever, zero respect for architecture, launched himself off the porch steps and into the lookout tower like a furry meteor.

The fortress became a crater. The kids cheered. The dog sneezed out a leaf and looked proud.

Kyle stood in the wreckage, rake in hand, leaves in his shoes, leaves in his pockets, possibly leaves in his soul.

“Best fort ever,” his daughter said.

He’s raking again this weekend.

The kids have already drawn up new plans. The dog has already started stretching. Kyle has already accepted his fate.
