MAPLE COUNTY — The parking lot at Precinct 9 has become a theater of municipal drama after the elections office’s new traffic cone layout drew a formal complaint, a counter-complaint, and — in a gesture officials are still interpreting — a single apology cone placed anonymously by the entrance.
The layout, designed by facilities coordinator Tom Beckett, uses 22 cones to channel voters through a one-way loop intended to separate incoming and outgoing traffic. Beckett, who describes the design as elegant, spent a full Saturday placing the cones with a measuring wheel and what he called an artist’s eye.
The complaint, filed by voter Sandra Okafor, alleges the loop adds 40 unnecessary feet to her walk and forces her to pass the bake sale table twice, which she described as a gauntlet of temptation. The counter-complaint, filed by Beckett himself, alleges that Okafor moved three cones with her foot, an act he termed cone vigilantism.
Surveillance footage — the church parking lot has one camera, aimed mostly at the dumpster — shows a figure in a raincoat nudging a cone approximately six inches to the left. The figure’s identity remains unconfirmed, though Beckett has his suspicions and Okafor has an alibi involving a dentist appointment.
The apology cone appeared Tuesday morning: a single orange cone placed neatly by the door with a handwritten note reading SORRY ABOUT THE CONES. Handwriting analysis has not been performed, though three separate residents have claimed the note is in their mother’s handwriting.
Elections Director Carol Voss has declined to adjudicate, calling the matter a facilities issue and, under her breath, a cone thing. She has, however, authorized Beckett to add signage explaining the loop, which he has done with laminated arrows and a level of enthusiasm the sign shop described as concerning.
Traffic flow on the first day of early voting was reportedly smooth, with average loop time clocking in at 47 seconds. Okafor completed the loop in 39 seconds, a personal best she attributed to proper footwear and righteous determination. The bake sale table reported record brownie sales from loop-trapped voters.
Beckett is already planning next year’s layout, which he says will feature fewer cones but better cones, possibly reflective. Okafor says she will be watching. The apology cone remains by the door, where it has become something of a local landmark — voters photograph it, children salute it, and one man left a flower.
