The Fall Back Fan Club, a 200-member organization devoted to the end of daylight saving time, named the 2:00 a.m. hour its ‘Person of the Year’ Tuesday, honoring the hour’s ‘unprecedented decision to appear twice in a single night.’
‘Most hours show up once and call it a day,’ said club president Sheila Vargas, taking a break from the Microwave Clock Reset Hotline. ‘But 2:00 a.m.? It comes back. It does an encore. That is commitment. That is showmanship.’
The award ceremony, held at 2:00 a.m. and then again at 2:00 a.m., featured a keynote address titled ‘Twice in One Night: A Masterclass,’ a moment of silence ‘observed twice,’ and a cake decorated to read ‘Happy Birthday, Hour.’
Runner-up for the award was 1:59 a.m., praised for ‘setting the stage,’ and third place went to 3:00 a.m., which the club acknowledged ‘has to follow the double act, which can’t be easy.’
Critics note that the 2:00 a.m. hour ‘is not a person’ and ‘cannot receive awards.’ The club dismisses this. ‘Tell that to the hour,’ Vargas said. ‘It showed up twice. What have you done?’
The club’s Person of the Year for the spring-forward, the missing 2:00 a.m. hour, was honored with an empty chair and ‘a profound sense of absence.’
